A Long-Term Look at the Farm Safety Net

That also has spilled over to supporting the other businesses farmers rely on.

OMAHA (DTN) — A new economic analysis from farm economists suggests the farm safety net doesn’t just help farmers through downturns. It has become woven...

The Market Never Waits for Perfect Information

Statistics Canada isn't timely with its crop acreage and production estimates; USDA survey response rates to reports like crop production, acreage and grain stocks were 80% to 85% in 1992 but declined to 50% to 55% in 2016 and are now averaging about 30%. USDA wants to improve its reports, but farmers simply cannot wait for perfect information before making marketing decisions.

What DTN is Watching

Markets

Friday looks to be a quiet day for reports, with CFTC to release their weekly Commitments of Traders report at 2:30 p.m. CDT, wrapping up the week with a look into trader positions as of Tuesday, July 14. Otherwise, traders will continue to monitor the ongoing conflicts in the Black Sea and Persian Gulf, as well as U.S. weather which will remain critical for the next 30-45 days.

Weather

A large plume of wildfire smoke continues to work across the Great Lakes and into the Mid-Atlantic on Friday. In addition, isolated showers will expand across the region as a system moves through Ontario. Both should help to cut temperatures back a few degrees, but high heat continues in the Northern Plains and Upper Midwest.
