Wintry Mix Across the South

Southern areas will see a mix of rain, snow, and freezing rain today as an area of low-pressure moves in, with NH/VT/ME remaining mostly dry.

General Overview: WINTER STORM SYSTEM TO BRING RAIN, SNOW, AND FREEZING RAIN ACROSS MUCH OF THE CENTRAL AND EASTERN US OVER THE NEXT FEW DAYS. A FEW STRONGER STORMS WILL BE SEEN ACROSS PARTS OF THE LOWER MIDWEST ON THURSDAY. TEMPERATURES WILL BE WELL ABOVE AVERAGE IN THE CENTRAL US BUT BELOW AVERAGE IN THE WEST.

EAST: A series of winter systems will impact the Great Lakes and Northeast over the next few days. Heavy snow is expected across the interior Northeast and Great Lakes, with concerns for freezing rain as well across northern areas. As warmer air moves in, rain and thunderstorms will develop across parts of the Southeast through the middle of the week with severe storms possible across parts of IL. By Saturday, drier conditions may return across much of the eastern US. Sunday and into early next week, a deep area of low-pressure will move northeast along the Atlantic Coast, giving way to wind, rain, and snow impacts across the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast.

Temperature Anomalies:

-Days 1-3: Well above average temperatures, 6-12°F above normal
-Days 4-6: Cooling trend, near normal to slightly below average
-Days 7-10: Generally near normal temperatures

CENTRAL: Snow will continue today across the Upper Midwest as the winter system departs eastward. Another area of low-pressure will bring a wintry mix of rain, snow, and freezing rain across the Midwest and North/Central Plains Thursday, with snow likely lingering along the northern fringes of the Upper Midwest on Friday. Further south across the Mid Mississippi Valley, rain and thunderstorms will become possible on Thursday. Strong high-pressure ridging may bring drier conditions back to all areas this weekend.

Temperature Anomalies:

-Days 1-3: Well above average, 10-15°F above normal for many areas
-Days 4-6: Cooling trend, but still above normal for most
-Days 7-10: Near to slightly above normal temperatures

WEST: A series of storm systems will bring periods of rain and mountain snow to the West Coast and Intermountain West over the next few days. Heavy snow is likely in the Cascades and Northern Rockies, with winter storm warnings in effect for some areas. This weekend, drier conditions will likely return inland, although rain and elevated snow showers will remain possible across the coast as a new area of low-pressure approaches from the west.

Temperature Anomalies:

-Days 1-3: Below average temperatures, 5-10°F below normal
-Days 4-6: Gradual warming trend, near normal by day 6
-Days 7-10: Near to slightly above normal temperatures

TROPICAL: No tropical cyclone activity is expected during the next 7 days.
