Well Above Normal Temperatures Across the South
Temperatures will be 10-25 degrees above normal today for southern areas, with the warmest anomalies being across the Mississippi Valley. Northwestern areas will be near normal to 10 degrees above normal.
General Overview: ACTIVE WEATHER PATTERN BRINGS HEAVY PRECIPITATION AND SEVERE STORM THREATS TO CENTRAL AND EASTERN US, WHILE WEST EXPERIENCES ABOVE AVERAGE TEMPERATURES
EAST: A potent storm system will bring multiple hazards to the eastern United States over the next few days. Heavy rain and thunderstorms are expected across the Southeast and Mid-Atlantic, with a risk of severe storms capable of producing damaging winds and tornadoes. Further north, a wintry mix of snow, sleet, and freezing rain is likely across parts of the Northeast and Great Lakes, potentially leading to hazardous travel conditions. As the system moves through, colder air will filter in behind it, bringing a return to more seasonable temperatures by the weekend.
Temperature Anomalies:
-Days 1-3: Well above average temperatures, particularly in the Northeast, with anomalies of 6-12°F above normal.
-Days 4-6: Cooling trend begins, with temperatures returning closer to seasonal averages.
-Days 7-10: Near to slightly below average temperatures across most of the region.
CENTRAL: The central United States will be at the center of a volatile weather pattern over the coming days. A powerful low-pressure system will bring the threat of severe thunderstorms, including the potential for tornadoes, large hail, and damaging winds across parts of the Southern Plains and Mississippi Valley. Heavy rainfall could lead to flash flooding in some areas. To the north, a swath of heavy snow is possible from the Northern Plains into the Upper Midwest. As the system moves east, colder air will filter in, bringing a sharp drop in temperatures by the weekend.
Temperature Anomalies:
-Days 1-3: Well above average temperatures, with anomalies of 6-12°F above normal for much of the region.
-Days 4-6: Sharp cooling trend, with temperatures dropping to near or below average.
-Days 7-10: Below average temperatures become more widespread, especially in the Northern Plains.
WEST: The western United States will experience generally quieter weather compared to the central and eastern regions. However, a series of Pacific storm systems will bring periods of rain and mountain snow to the Pacific Northwest and Northern Rockies. The Southwest will remain largely dry and warm. A persistent ridge of high pressure will lead to well above average temperatures across much of the region, particularly in the interior West.
Temperature Anomalies:
-Days 1-3: Significantly above average temperatures, with anomalies of 6-12°F or more above normal, especially in the interior West.
-Days 4-6: Continued well above average temperatures for most areas.
-Days 7-10: Slight moderation in temperatures, but still generally above average across the region.
TROPICAL: No tropical cyclone activity is expected in the Atlantic or Eastern Pacific basins over the next 7 days.
