SLAUGHTER CATTLE 168 197 270
Compared to the last sale, two weeks ago, slaughter cows and bulls sold
3.00-6.00 higher. Demand was good on a light supply. Even with above freezing
temperatures, ice packed gravel roads continue to make it difficult to
transport cattle. The top slaughter bull sold for 216.00/cwt. and the top
slaughter cow sold for 188.00/cwt. On the replacement side, the top bred
heifers sold for 3500.00/head and the top bred cows sold for 2900.00/head while
pairs were not well tested. The quality of the offering was below average as
higher quality animals are waiting to sell at the special replacement sale this
Saturday. The USDA's Cold Storage Report released last week reported total
pounds of beef in freezers were up 3 percent from the previous month but down 4
percent from last year.
