Compared to last week: Steer calves under 450 lbs steady to 3.00 higher,
450-650 lbs 7.00 to 10.00 higher. Heifer calves under 450 lbs 5.00 to 8.00
lower, over 450 lbs unevenly steady. Yearling feeder steers unevenly steady,
yearling feeder heifers 13.00 to 16.00 lower. Moderate to good demand for
calves, more moderate for yearlings this week. The futures contracts
fluctuated wildly throughout the week, making it incredibly difficult for
cattle producers to make decisions concerning the market. Sound market
fundamentals that propelled this market to record prices, has now been
overshadowed by uncertainty and fear coming from the cattle futures complex.
Cash fed cattle were lower again this week as packers point to a declining
futures contract and bid accordingly. Cash fat cattle in Iowa on Friday traded
as low as 218.00, which is par with Dec Live Cattle. Large auction receipts in
central and western SD auctions, as cattle producers continue their fall
marketing. Lighter calf receipts in East River auctions as is normal for this
time of the year, larger calf offerings expected this next week.
