Compared to last week, a light test of feeders under 600 lbs. sold unevenly
steady, feeders over 600 lbs. sold steady to 5.00 higher. Many sales were off
or had very light offerings due to a combination of factors including the
holiday week, the heat, and hay season. A few annual holiday week special sales
made up the majority of this week's offering and were mostly heavy weight
yearling cattle sold in load or multiload lots. Many of these cattle had
attractive weight ups for buyers due to the extreme heat this past week. The
weather finally provided a break and nearly every piece of hay equipment in the
state found its way to the field. Producers giving a much different report on
the late cutting hay as plenty of moisture kept undergrowth growing good and
yields were much better than early cut hay, although quality varied depending
on grass types. Cattle futures lost significant ground and are way behind the
cash markets at the current time. A few stick-out sales this week was mostly
weights over 600 lbs. at some of the weeks special sales. Unionville Livestock
Market sold a load of 611 lb. steers for 509.50, a load of 671 lb. steers for
472.00 and a load of 735 lb. steers for 432.50. Green City Livestock Auction
sold 42 head of 764 lb. steers for 410.50 and a load of 833 lb. steers for
387.50. Joplin Regional Stockyards sold 30 head of 861 lb. steers for 375.00
and 10 full loads (616 head) of 941 lb. steers at 362.00. Green City Livestock
Auction sold 2 loads of 713 lb. heifers for 391.00. Due to the 4th of July no
USDA reports were published on Friday. Boxed beef cut-out values were lower for
the week as of Thursday's close. Choice closed on Thursday at 387.07, down 3.96
and Select closed at 367.43, down 4.15 compared to last week. The choice/select
spread is at 19.64 per cwt. Negotiated feedlot sales as of the 2:00 cutoff time
on Thursday was reported at 56K head. Live sales reported at 255.00-256.00 and
dressed sales 403.00. The Missouri Stocker formula consists of 3158 head with a
weighted average weight of 557.88 lbs. and a price value of 477.19, 0.91 higher
than last week. The steer/heifer is 49.04 per cwt.
