Compared to last week: Feeder steers and heifers were both too lightly tested
either this week or last week to develop an accurate market trend, however
higher undertones were noticed. Feeder quality this week was mixed from plain
to attractive. Demand for feeders was mostly good to very good despite a light
offering. A single load lot of feeder steers was seen today and these offerings
were met with very good demand. CME positions continue to push higher driven by
very tight market ready supplies and good demand for box beef items. The boxed
beef cutout closed today at 371.76 on choice and 359.84 on select, 4.51 and
0.91 higher respectively. Demand for cutting bulls remains very good as several
buyers were looking for bulls to cut and make steers. Market activity was
mostly active today with a large number of order buyers on hand as well as
internet buyers noticed for todays sale. Weigh up cows comprised a majority of
the offering this week. Demand was mostly good for heavy offerings. Demand for
slaughter cows was mostly moderate to good. Packers pick around to try to find
cows to fit slaughter cow buying orders, however demand for feeding cows kept
cow prices mostly above slaughter cow tickets. Slaughter cows sold mostly
steady to 2.00 higher on breaking cows, boning and lean cows sold steady to
3.00 higher in a narrow comparison. Additional packer buyers were in the market
this week with helped improve slaughter cow prices. Feeding cow demand was good
to very good again this week. Feeding cows sold mostly 1.00-3.00 higher on a
significantly higher quality, higher yielding offering. Quality this week was
mostly attractive to very attractive. Weigh up conditions were mostly above
average with many very empty cows coming off grass. Slaughter bulls sold on
moderate to good demand this week. Slaughter bulls sold steady to 3.00 lower in
a narrow comparison. Bull quality was average to attractive this week. Bull
prices started the day fully steady with last week but prices eased as the sale
progressed and additional packer buyers exited the market. Young cows suitable
to feed or rebreed sold on very good demand for light to moderate offerings.
Most offerings sold unevenly steady. Quality was mixed which led to uneven
prices. Additionally a large portion of the young cow offering continues to be
comprised of open baron cows which have never had a calf. A large offering of 3
and 4 year old cows were seen today. Very little difference in price was seen
between high quality 2 and 3 year old cows which had lost calves as demand for
rebreed and recip cows remains very good.
