Compared to last week: Feeder cattle were too lightly tested last week to
develop any market trend. Demand was mostly good for very light offerings.
Quality this week was mostly plain to average. Many unreportable, blemished
cattle continue to be seen, especially on yearlings and long weaned summer
calves. Cutting bulls continue to sell on very good demand as buyers search for
bulls suitable to cut and make steers. The internet remains very active with
several buyers noticed. CME feeder cattle positions saw a very volatile trading
week as outside influences produced several knee jerk reactions from traders.
Market activity this week was mostly active with good buyer participation
noticed, both over the internet and in the stands. Weigh up cows sold on
moderate to good demand for light offerings. Slaughter cow demand was not as
strong as last week with fewer packer buyers in the market. Slaughter cows were
too lightly tested last week to develop an accurate market trend, however
steady to lower undertones were noticed. The majority of the cow offering was
purchased to feed with only extremely blemished cows purchased for immediate
harvest. Feeding cow demand was very good again this week. Canadian cow feeders
remain a large player in all auction markets pushing packer buyers to own high
quality feeding cows. High quality high yielding feeding cows sold fully steady
following last weeks price increase. The bulk of the feeding cows sold steady
to weak on a slightly lower quality offering compared to the week prior. A
large buyer pool was on hand this past week of both private feeders and packer
buyers. Ranches continue to brand and sort off dry cows and bring them to
market however the volume of cows is starting to slow as many ranchers have
cows turned out for the summer. Cow quality this week was mostly average to
attractive, but overall not as attractive as last weeks offering. Slaughter
bulls sold mostly 2.00-4.00 lower. High dressing bulls to the largest decline
in price this week, while low and average dressing bulls were absorbed by
feeding bull buyers and held near steady. Feeding bulls sold 1.00-2.00 higher
with a larger portion of the bull offering returning to feed. Young age cows
suitable to feed or rebreed sold unevenly steady this week as some sales saw
lower interest, while other sales demand remained steady. Demand depended on
the sale and the buyers present. Demand was uneven throughout the week as some
sales had more buyers than others. Quality this week was mixed from plain to
attractive but overall was not as attractive as last week. Slightly blemished
offerings continue to be purchased to feed, many of these offerings were
slightly blemished in some way (short tails, slightly long toes, etc.) Buyers
have been buying cows up to 6 years old as replacements over the past few
weeks. Demand from feeding buyers was very good, especially for heavy weight,
fleshy offerings which buyers could blend on market ready loads.
