Near Normal

Temperatures will trend closer to normal today as a cold front passes through the region.

General Overview: AFTER A QUIETER STRETCH INTO THE WEEKEND, THE PATTERN TURNS MORE ACTIVE NEXT WEEK, BRINGING RAIN, SNOW, AND THUNDERSTORMS TO MUCH OF THE NATION. TEMPERATURES TREND WELL ABOVE AVERAGE FOR MOST AREAS.

EAST: Areas of showers and storms will shift to the southeast through the later work week. A drier pattern will prevail this weekend. Rain chances will return to the Northeast by Monday. Some snow is possible in northern New England. By the middle of next week, a cold front sweeping through will bring a round of showers and storms to the eastern third of the country. Gusty winds are likely with some of the stronger storms.

Temperature Anomalies:

-Days 1-3: Near normal in the Northeast, 6-12°F above normal in the Southeast and Mid-Atlantic
-Days 4-6: Warming to 6-12°F above normal for most areas
-Days 7-10: Cooling trend, but still generally 3-6°F above normal

CENTRAL: A few light snow showers are possible across far northern areas into this weekend. Further south, rain and thunderstorms are expected from the Southern Plains into the Ohio Valley today, with conditions drying this weekend. By early next week, a developing storm system will bring some snow to parts of the Northern Plains and Upper Midwest, with rain and thunderstorms further south. Some severe storms are possible in the Southern Plains.

Temperature Anomalies:

-Days 1-3: Near to slightly below normal in the north, 6-12°F above normal in the south
-Days 4-6: Warming to 6-12°F above normal for most areas, with some spots up to 15°F above normal
-Days 7-10: Gradual cooling trend, but still generally 3-9°F above normal

WEST: Drier weather will prevail into the weekend. A series of Pacific storm systems will bring periods of rain and mountain snow to much of the region through early next week. The heaviest precipitation is expected in the Pacific Northwest and Northern Rockies. By midweek, another system will move into the region, bringing widespread rain and high elevation snow. Critical fire weather conditions are possible in parts of the Southwest and High Plains.

-Days 1-3: Near normal in the Northwest, 3-9°F above normal elsewhere
-Days 4-6: Warming to 6-12°F above normal for most areas
-Days 7-10: Continued above normal, generally 3-9°F above average

TROPICAL: No tropical cyclone activity is expected over the next 7 days.
