Compared to last week: Feeder steers 4.00-14.00 lower with the biggest decline
on heavy weights. Feeder heifers over 750lbs 8.00-13.00 lower, under 750lbs
5.00-8.00 lower. Both steer and heifer runs started even lower than quoted but
did improve as the sale progressed. Thin-fleshed eared cattle were not
discounted as heavily today, as buyer interest was driven more by flesh
condition than overall quality. Steer calves 5.00-10.00 higher in a limited
supply of number 1 cattle. Heifer calves steady to 5.00 lower. Bulk of calf
supply consisted of either unweaned or soft fleshy short-weaned cattle. Calf
quality did improve from very plain to plain by the end of the sale. Parts of
Oklahoma received rainfall over the past week, but showers remained scattered
and inconsistent. Some producers commented that pasture conditions resemble
what is typically seen in August. After losses on Monday and Tuesday, CME
futures traded in the green today. Fed cattle trade continues to set records
with northern live sales reaching 265 and dressed sales up to 410, while
southern trade brought 262.
