Compared to last week, steers sold 5.00 to 15.00 higher. Heifers weighing 500
to 800 lbs sold steady to 5.00 higher, while other weights were 3.00 to 8.00
lower. Demand was good to very good. Slaughter cows sold 3.00 to 5.00 higher,
while slaughter bulls were 8.00 to 9.00 higher. Compared to last week, trading
of Kansas negotiated fed cattle sold 4.00 to 5.00 higher at 260.00 to 265.00.
In the hay market, Demand remained strong this past week as old crop
inventories continued to tighten. Prices trended higher amid expectations of a
lighter first cutting of alfalfa and ongoing drought conditions across the
western two thirds of the state. With warmer temperatures settling in, alfalfa
harvest activity has begun to increase across many areas.
