Compared to last week: Steer calves 15.00 to 30.00 higher, heifer calves 10.00
to 25.00 higher. Yearling feeder steers steady to 3.00 higher, except 800--850
and 1000-1050 lbs 10.00 higher. Yearling feeder heifers 5.00 to 15.00 higher.
Extremely good demand for spring born steer and heifer calves, good to very
good demand for yearling steers and heifers. The fall run has begun in Western
South Dakota and auction markets had large offerings of those good,
ranch-raised, high quality steer and heifer calves coming right off the cow.
The market was very active as there was new found optimism in the market at
early week. Sharply lower trade in the futures contracts did little to slow
that down. Cash fed cattle topped at 241.00 in the north, helping to support
the feeder market but cattle feeders ended the week more apprehensive about the
direction of the market.
