NATIONAL FEEDER & STOCKER CATTLE SUMMARY - WEEK ENDING 01/31/2026

RECEIPTS: Auctions Direct Video/Internet Total
This Week: 103,600 30,000 11,100 144,700
Last Week: 238,100 30,700 49,100 317,900
Year Ago: 293,900 47,600 6,800 348,300

Compared to last week, steers and heifers were 5.00 to 8.00 higher in the
North Central region, while other regions were not tested due to Winter Storm
Fern covering a wide swath of the Midwest and Southeast with bone chilling
cold and larger than normal snow fall. Some areas in the Southeast even
received ice and it was reported by news agencies that at one point there
were about one million people without power, primarily in Tennessee,
Mississippi and Louisiana. Ranchers in those areas were just trying to
survive that storm only to be hit with Winter Storm Gianna that left up to a
foot of snow in parts of Tennessee and North Carolina. Demand was good to
very good on offerings in sales that had decent volume. Total receipts on
this report were the smallest in a non-holiday week since the week
ending February 20, 2021. The North Central part of the country is more
accustomed to these extreme temperatures as most of their reported auctions
are later in the week and weather conditions were not as severe. The North
Central area accounted for over 85 pct of the auction receipts this week.
For those auctions that did have sales this week, there was good to very good
demand for all weights of steers and heifers. The Arctic weather seems to
move out of the country when looking at upcoming forecasts. This will allow
feeder cattle producers to get their stock shipped to town and get met with
eager buyers. A bullish outlook for 2026 is in the air as the Cattle
Inventory report reported beef cows down near 400K from the previous year,
while beef heifer replacements were only reported as being around 160K more
than a year ago. The beef cow number was estimated at 27.6 million head, 1
pct below a year ago. In addition, the 2025 calf crop was reported 2 pct
below a year ago, meaning there will be fewer fed cattle coming to market in
2026 and fed cattle prices will probably hang around the current pricing
level for a longer period. Negotiated cash sales in the Southern Plains this
week sold at mostly 240.00, 4.00 to 7.00 higher. Sales in Nebraska were 4.00
to 6.00 higher on a live basis at 240.00 to 241.00, mostly 241.00, while
dressed sales were 5.00 to 8.00 higher at 375.00 to 378.00. Choice boxed
beef closed on Friday at 365.56, 3.36 lower and Select closed at 361.94, 0.45
lower when compared to last week. Weekly Cattle Slaughter under federal
inspection estimated at 531K, 4K less than last week and 71K less than a year
ago. Auction volume this week included 71 percent weighing over 600 lbs and
37 percent heifers.
