Compared to last week, the undertone on steers under 600 lbs was sharply lower
as comparable sales were difficult to find. Steers over 600 lbs and all
weights of heifers 10.00 to 20.00 lower. Boning and Breaking Utility Slaughter
cows and slaughter bulls sold steady to 4.00 higher, while Lean cows sold
steady to 2.00 lower. Demand was light to moderate as CME futures was under
pressure it seemed like all week long and exhibited sharp losses again this
week. Very light trading of negotiated fed cattle sales in feedlots sold 3.00
lower at 235.00. This past week in the hay market, demand remained slow and
prices stayed steady for dairy alfalfa and grass hay. Trade remains slow to
moderate. Producers continue with fall harvest while also putting up the last
few cuttings alfalfa, which seem to be higher quality. There is still an
abundance of forage across the state, but there is no new movement, as most
producers are busy in the fields.
