Compared to last week: Feeder cattle were too lightly tested to develop any
market trend. Demand was mostly good to very good for very light offerings.
Quality this week was mostly plain to average. Many unreportable, blemished
cattle continue to be seen, especially on yearlings and long weaned summer
calves. Cutting bulls continue to sell on very good demand as buyers search for
bulls suitable to cut and make steers and competed with buyers looking for
bulls to test and turn out with cows. The internet remains very active with
several buyers noticed. CME feeder cattle positions have traded sideways for
much of the week with some higher and some lower days noticed. Boxed beef
prices have struggled followed post holiday demand slump. The choice cutout
closed Friday at 373.55 while select closed at 351.49. The August feeder cattle
contract closed Friday at 323.575, 1.75 lower than last Friday, while the
September and October contracts closed at 324.20 and 322.30, 1.20 and 0.90
lower respectfully. Market activity this week was mostly active with good buyer
participation noticed. Weigh up cows sold on good to very good demand for light
to moderate offerings. Slaughter cow demand was slightly better than last week
as more cows were purchased to go to immediate slaughter this week compared to
last week. Increases in demand were noticed from southern packers as increases
in prices of southern slaughter cows have allowed them to become more
competitive with Northern packers. Breaking cows sold mostly steady to 2.00
higher, boning and lean cows sold 1.00-2.00 higher. The majority of the cow
offering continues to be purchased to feed. Feeding cow demand was very good.
Feeding cows sold steady to 1.00 higher. Quality this week was mostly average
to attractive. Slaughter bulls sold mostly 3.00-5.00 higher as packers showed
strong demand for bulls for immediate slaughter. Several feeding bull buyers
remain active in the market. Feeding bulls sold mostly 3.00 to 6.00 higher.
Many bulls which were purchased to feed had been turned out with cows and
needed to be fed in order to recoup some yield lost in breeding season. Young
age cows suitable to feed or rebreed sold on mostly good demand. Too few
offerings were seen this week to develop any market trend.
