Compared to last week, feeders steers and heifers were uneven from 5.00 lower
to 5.00 higher. Steer and heifers calves under 700 lbs. were 8.00-16.00 lower
with spots 20.00 lower. Demand was moderate on a moderate supply. The quality
was below average with a lot of green, short-weaned calves in the offering. The
largest draft of the day was 144 head of 647 lb. heifers which brought
315.00/cwt. With hotter temperatures and high humidity in the forecast, calves
were having difficulty finding a new home. Cattle Futures traded sharply lower
as Boxed Beef set what most consider record highs, if you take out the short
abnormally during the height of covid, with Choice closing at 386.50 and Select
at 372.54.
