Quiet Day Ahead
With weak, broad high pressure shifting into the region, a fairly dry and quiet day is anticipated throughout the region.
General Overview: SIGNIFICANT WINTER WEATHER EXPECTED ACROSS THE UPPER MIDWEST TO THE NORTHEAST WITH PERIODS OF SNOW AND RAIN EXPECTED. ABOVE NORMAL TEMPERATURES WILL DOMINATE THE NORTHERN PLAINS AND UPPER MIDWEST WHILE COOLER CONDITIONS DEVELOP ACROSS THE SOUTHEAST LATER IN THE PERIOD.
EAST:
Snow showers persist today across the interior Northeast, with mostly dry weather expected elsewhere. Tuesday, mixed precipitation will spread across the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic with areas of snow extending from the Upper Midwest into the Northeast. By Wednesday, the system will strengthen with snow expanding across much of the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic, likely remaining as rain along the coast. Snow showers linger Thursday before drying out on Friday. The Southeast will start relatively dry but may see some rain developing along the Gulf Coast of Florida by midweek, with rain chances increasing across the region through the late week as the front moves through.
Temperature Anomalies:
-Days 1-3: Generally near to slightly above normal across most of the Northeast, with cooler than normal conditions developing across the Southeast by day 3.
-Days 4-6: Cooling trend continues with temperatures falling to below normal across much of the Southeast and Mid-Atlantic, while the Northeast remains near normal.
-Days 7-10: Below normal temperatures becoming established across the Southeast and gradually spreading northward, with most of the East experiencing slightly below normal temperatures by day 10.
CENTRAL:
The Central U.S. will experience uneventful weather through much of this week. Snow and mixed precipitation will develop across the northern Plains and Upper Midwest on Monday, with snow showers linger over the region through Tuesday. Another system may greet the Northern Plains/Upper Midwest Thursday and into Friday, with additional snow showers possible. Further south, high pressure over the Gulf Coast will maintain relatively quiet weather across the southern Plains throughout the week, although rain showers may greet the region through the middle of the week.
Temperature Anomalies:
-Days 1-3: Significantly above normal temperatures across the Northern Plains and Upper Midwest, with anomalies of 6-12°F above normal. Near normal conditions across the southern Plains.
-Days 4-6: Continued above normal temperatures across the Northern Plains, gradually moderating. Cooler than normal conditions developing across portions of the southern Plains.
-Days 7-10: Temperature pattern begins to reverse with below normal temperatures spreading across the southern Plains and gradually moving northward, while the northern Plains maintain slightly above normal readings.
WEST:
High pressure will dominate much of the Western U.S., resulting in generally dry conditions for most areas throughout the week. Some light precipitation is possible along the Pacific Northwest coast and in the northern Rockies. A pattern change could be seen through the midweek with precipitation chances tapering for the Pacific Northwest, with drier conditions possibly lasting into the weekend.
Temperature Anomalies:
-Days 1-3: Above normal temperatures across most of the West, particularly across the northern Rockies and Pacific Northwest where anomalies will be 3-6°F above normal.
-Days 4-6: Continued above normal temperatures, though moderating slightly. The Southwest may see temperatures closer to normal by day 6.
-Days 7-10: Temperatures remain above normal across most of the West, with the warmest anomalies shifting toward the central and southern Rockies by the end of the period.
TROPICAL:
No tropical cyclone activity is expected during the next 7 days in either the Atlantic or Eastern Pacific basins.
