Near to Above Normal Temperatures

Temperatures will be within 5 degrees of normal for most areas and closer to 10 degrees above normal for southeastern areas.

General Overview: MAJOR WINTER STORM TO IMPACT NORTHERN TIER STATES WITH HEAVY SNOW AND FREEZING RAIN. SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS POSSIBLE IN THE SOUTH. TEMPERATURES WELL ABOVE AVERAGE FOR MUCH OF THE COUNTRY.

EAST:  A powerful storm system will bring a variety of hazardous weather to the eastern United States over the next few days. Heavy snow is expected across the northern tier, with accumulations of 6-12 inches possible in some areas. Freezing rain is also a concern, particularly for parts of the Northeast and Great Lakes regions, which could lead to significant ice accumulations and power outages. Further south, there is a risk of severe thunderstorms, with the greatest threat on Wednesday across parts of the Southeast. By Thursday, a cold front will sweep through, bringing cooler temperatures and clearing conditions to end the week.

Temperature Anomalies:

-Days 1-3: Well above average temperatures, particularly in the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic, with anomalies of 6-12°F above normal.

-Days 4-6: Cooling trend begins, with temperatures returning closer to seasonal averages.

-Days 7-10: Near to slightly below normal temperatures for most areas.

CENTRAL:  The central United States will be at the center of a dynamic weather pattern over the next few days. A strong low pressure system will bring heavy snow to the northern Plains and Upper Midwest, with blizzard conditions possible in some areas. To the south of the snow line, there is a risk of severe thunderstorms across parts of the southern Plains and Mississippi Valley. These storms could produce damaging winds, large hail, and possibly a few tornadoes. As the system moves east, colder air will filter in behind it, bringing a return to more seasonal temperatures by the weekend.

Temperature Anomalies:

-Days 1-3: Significantly above average temperatures for most areas, with anomalies of 6-12°F above normal in many locations.

-Days 4-6: Cooling trend begins from northwest to southeast, with temperatures returning closer to seasonal averages.

-Days 7-10: Below normal temperatures for the northern Plains and Upper Midwest, near normal elsewhere.

WEST:  The western United States will experience a mix of weather conditions over the next few days. A series of storm systems will bring periods of rain and mountain snow to the Pacific Northwest and northern Rockies. Meanwhile, much of the Southwest will remain dry and mild. By the weekend, a ridge of high pressure is expected to build over the region, leading to warmer and drier conditions for most areas.

Temperature Anomalies:

-Days 1-3: Near to slightly above average temperatures for most areas, with the warmest anomalies in the Southwest.

-Days 4-6: Warming trend continues, with temperatures climbing to 6-12°F above normal for much of the region.

-Days 7-10: Well above average temperatures persist, particularly in the interior West, with anomalies of 12°F or more above normal in some areas.

TROPICAL: No tropical cyclone activity is expected during the next 7 days.
