Near Normal Today

Temperatures will be within 5 degrees of normal for most today.

General Overview: WINTER STORM TO BRING HEAVY SNOW, FREEZING RAIN, AND SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS TO MUCH OF THE EASTERN US OVER THE NEXT FEW DAYS. TEMPERATURES WILL BE WELL ABOVE AVERAGE IN THE EAST AND BELOW AVERAGE IN THE WEST.

EAST: A powerful winter storm system will impact the eastern United States over the next few days. Heavy snow is expected across the Great Lakes and interior Northeast, with accumulations of 6-12 inches possible in some areas. Freezing rain will be a concern from the Ohio Valley into the Mid-Atlantic, potentially leading to significant ice accumulations and power outages. Further south, severe thunderstorms are possible across the Southeast, with damaging winds and isolated tornadoes the main threats. Heavy rainfall may also lead to flooding issues in parts of the region. By Sunday, the system will move offshore, with improving conditions expected early next week.

Temperature Anomalies:

-Days 1-3: Well above average, with temperatures 6-12°F above normal across much of the region.
-Days 4-6: Cooling trend, with temperatures returning closer to seasonal averages.
-Days 7-10: Near to slightly below average temperatures expected.

CENTRAL: A complex weather pattern will affect the central United States over the next several days. Snow and mixed precipitation are likely across the Northern Plains and Upper Midwest, while rain and thunderstorms are expected further south. There is a risk of severe weather in parts of the Southern Plains and lower Mississippi Valley. As the system moves east, colder air will filter in behind it, bringing a return to more seasonal temperatures by early next week.

Temperature Anomalies:

-Days 1-3: Above average temperatures for most areas, especially in the Plains.
-Days 4-6: Cooling trend, with temperatures falling to near or below average.
-Days 7-10: Below average temperatures likely, especially in the northern areas.

WEST: Generally quiet weather is expected across much of the western United States over the next few days. Some rain and mountain snow are possible in the Pacific Northwest and Northern Rockies. Dry conditions will persist across the Southwest, with an elevated fire weather risk in some areas due to low humidity and gusty winds.

Temperature Anomalies:

-Days 1-3: Below average temperatures, especially in the Northwest and Rockies.
-Days 4-6: Gradual warming trend, with temperatures returning closer to seasonal averages.
-Days 7-10: Near to slightly above average temperatures expected for most areas.

TROPICAL: No tropical cyclone activity is expected during the next 7 days.
