Multiple Systems Moving Through This Week in Cold Pattern
Another large system will move across the southeastern half of the country early this week, followed by several fronts and little systems across the north.
In the Midwest, heavy snow fell across a large area of the region over the weekend. Another couple of bands of lighter snow will move through Monday and Tuesday across the south. Several other fronts will move through the region for the rest of the week and a clipper system will move through over the weekend with streaks of light snow. The snow will help with soil moisture, but may have to wait as it slowly melts in the colder air this week.
In the Northern Plains, a band of heavy snow moved across Montana and the Dakotas last Friday and was followed by drier conditions. Several fronts and little systems will move through this week with areas of snow. The snowpack is starting early this year and is likely to stick around for a while.
In the Central and Southern Plains, a system brought scattered showers to the region over the weekend, but mostly across the east, including some heavy snow in northeast Nebraska. Another little system developed Sunday night and is moving through the region on Monday. Some rain is found across the southeast, but a band of light snow is moving across Nebraska and Kansas. Another front pushing through on Wednesday into Thursday could bring some heavier snow to the west, otherwise precipitation will be lighter as the storm track generally pushes well off to the north.
In the Delta, a round of heavy rain and thunderstorms moved through over the weekend, boosting soil moisture. Another is doing so on Monday into Tuesday. And yet another front pushing through on Thursday may develop some showers as well. Soil moisture has been rising and drought has been decreasing in recent weeks. That momentum may slow as the pattern gets drier later this week.
In the Southeast, scattered showers moved through over the weekend, including some areas of heavy rain. Another system will do the same Monday and Tuesday. Yet another front moving through on Thursday may produce showers into Friday as a system rides along it. Drought has been in-and-out of the region for a while, but the pattern is favorable for increasing soil moisture in many areas this week.
In the Western U.S., a system went through northern areas over the weekend with scattered showers and some heavier mountain snow. The storm track will favor northern areas throughout the week, and frequent systems will mean some overall favorable precipitation for drought areas up there. Southern areas have enjoyed some more frequent precipitation lately but will be dry this week.
