Dry Today

Strong high-pressure will promote dry weather across the region today.

General Overview: RAIN AND SNOW LIKELY ACROSS THE NORTHERN TIERS, THUNDERSTORMS LIKELY ACROSS EASTERN PORTIONS OF THE US THIS WEEKEND. TEMPERATURES WELL ABOVE AVERAGE FOR MUCH OF THE CENTRAL AND WESTERN U.S.

EAST: A passing clipper system will give way to rain across much of the Eastern US this weekend, with snow and possibly a wintry mix developing over Michigan and the Northeast. Thunderstorms, some strong, may develop along a passing cold front on Sunday, with strong storms favoring parts of the Ohio Valley and into the Mid Atlantic. High-pressure will bring a return of drier conditions on Monday. Additional rain showers will be seen across the southeast US mid to late next week, with additional snow and gusty wind chances likely for parts of the Great Lakes and Northeast.

Temperature Anomalies:

-Days 1-3: Near average to slightly below average
-Days 4-6: Below average, especially in the Northeast
-Days 7-10: Gradually moderating back to near average

CENTRAL: Generally dry weather will be seen across much of the Central US through the end of the week and into early to mid next week. Rain and snow chances will be seen across the Northern Plains and Upper Midwest this weekend, with a cold front bringing rain and possibly thunderstorms to areas further south. A few strong storms could be possible, mainly across the Mid Mississippi Valley. Mid to late next week, rain and snow chances will continue for the Northern Plains and Upper Midwest, while high-pressure generally deters any precipitation further south.

Temperature Anomalies:

-Days 1-3: Well above average, especially in the Plains
-Days 4-6: Cooling trend, but still above average for many areas
-Days 7-10: Near to slightly above average

WEST: A series of storm systems will bring periods of rain and mountain snow to the Pacific Northwest and into the Northern Rockies over the next few days, with heavy snow possible across parts of the Cascades and northern Rocky Mountains. Elsewhere, blocking high-pressure will result in drier conditions. Critical fire weather conditions are possible in parts of the Southwest due to dry and windy conditions.

Temperature Anomalies:

-Days 1-3: Well above average, especially in the interior West
-Days 4-6: Remaining above average for most areas
-Days 7-10: Gradually cooling but still above average in many areas

TROPICAL: No tropical cyclone activity is expected during the next 7 days.
