Drier Today
Dry conditions return across most areas today.
General Overview: WINTER STORM SYSTEM TO BRING HEAVY SNOW AND MIXED PRECIPITATION TO NORTHERN TIER STATES, WHILE SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS THREATEN THE SOUTHEAST. TEMPERATURES WILL REMAIN ABOVE AVERAGE FOR MUCH OF THE CENTRAL AND WESTERN U.S.
EAST: A potent storm system will move through the region, bringing a variety of hazardous weather conditions. Heavy snow is expected across the northern Great Lakes and into parts of the Northeast, with accumulations of 6 inches or more possible. Further south, a mix of snow, sleet, and freezing rain will create treacherous travel conditions. As the system progresses, there is a risk of severe thunderstorms developing across portions of the Southeast, with damaging winds and isolated tornadoes possible.
Temperature Anomalies:
-Days 1-3: Near normal to slightly below normal temperatures across much of the region, with colder air filtering in behind the storm system.
-Days 4-6: Temperatures begin to moderate, with above normal readings spreading across the southern portions of the region.
-Days 7-10: Warmer than average temperatures become more widespread, particularly in the Mid-Atlantic and Southeast.
CENTRAL: A complex weather pattern will unfold across the Central U.S. over the next several days. A strong low pressure system will bring heavy snow and blizzard conditions to parts of the Northern Plains and Upper Midwest. Further south, rain and thunderstorms are expected, with some storms potentially becoming severe in the lower Mississippi Valley. As the system moves east, colder air will filter in behind it, bringing a brief shot of below normal temperatures to the region.
Temperature Anomalies:
-Days 1-3: Significantly above normal temperatures across much of the region, particularly in the Plains states.
-Days 4-6: Temperatures begin to moderate, with near normal to slightly above normal readings for most areas.
-Days 7-10: Above normal temperatures return, especially across the Plains and Upper Midwest.
WEST: The Western U.S. will experience generally tranquil weather over the next few days, with high pressure dominating the region. However, a series of weak disturbances may bring some light precipitation to the Pacific Northwest and Northern Rockies. Temperatures will remain well above average for much of the region, particularly in the Southwest and Intermountain West.
Temperature Anomalies:
-Days 1-3: Significantly above normal temperatures across most of the region, with some areas experiencing temperatures 10-15 degrees above average.
-Days 4-6: Continued warm conditions, though temperatures may cool slightly in the Pacific Northwest.
-Days 7-10: Above normal temperatures persist across much of the region, with the warmest anomalies shifting towards the Northern Rockies and High Plains.
TROPICAL: No tropical cyclone activity is expected in the Atlantic or Eastern Pacific basins over the next 7 days.
