Chances for rain / snow showers
Dry weather will dominate most southern areas today, though some rain / snow showers are expected in Michigan and Indiana this morning. A more widespread line of showers is expected late this evening across the area.
General Overview: A POTENT STORM SYSTEM WILL BRING A VARIETY OF HAZARDOUS WEATHER ACROSS MUCH OF THE CENTRAL AND EASTERN UNITED STATES OVER THE NEXT SEVERAL DAYS, INCLUDING HEAVY RAIN, THUNDERSTORMS, SNOW AND ICE.
EAST: An intense area of low pressure will track from the Central Plains into the Great Lakes region, spreading precipitation from the Mississippi Valley into the Ohio Valley and Northeast. Heavy rain and thunderstorms are expected from the Gulf Coast states northward into the Ohio Valley and Mid-Atlantic, with a risk of flash flooding. Farther north, a wintry mix of freezing rain, sleet and snow will impact areas from the Central Appalachians into the interior Northeast. Significant icing is possible in this region. As the storm intensifies, blizzard conditions may develop across portions of the Great Lakes.
Temperature Anomalies:
-Days 1-3: Well below normal across the Northeast, with near to slightly above normal temperatures from the Mid-Atlantic into the Southeast.
-Days 4-6: Below normal east of the Appalachians, near normal elsewhere.
-Days 7-10: Trending warmer than normal for much of the Eastern states.
CENTRAL: Severe thunderstorms capable of damaging winds, large hail and tornadoes are likely from the Lower Mississippi Valley into the Ohio Valley as the storm system strengthens. Heavy rain will also spread northward from the Southern Plains into the Upper Midwest, with a risk of flash flooding. On the northern side of the system, a swath of heavy snow is expected from the Central/Southern Plains into the Upper Midwest, with blizzard conditions possible.
Temperature Anomalies:
-Days 1-3: Well below normal north, near to slightly above normal south.
-Days 4-6: Below normal for most areas.
-Days 7-10: Moderating to near or slightly above normal.
WEST: The storm system will bring precipitation to portions of the Southwest, with heavy mountain snow likely for areas like the Southern Rockies. Dry and warm conditions are expected for the West Coast states. Critical fire weather conditions may develop over parts of the Southwest due to gusty winds and low humidity.
Temperature Anomalies:
-Days 1-3: Above normal across the West.
-Days 4-6: Continuing warm for the West Coast and Intermountain West, cooler in the Rockies.
-Days 7-10: Near to slightly below normal for most areas.
TROPICAL: No tropical cyclone activity is expected during the next 7 days.
