Another System Bringing Rain to South and East This Week

Heavy rain moved across the southern tier of the U.S. late last week and weekend. Another system will focus on heavier rain across the South and East this week.

In the Midwest, some showers skirted across the region over the weekend with heavier rain in the Missouri Bootheel and far southern Illinois. Another front will move through the region this week, but will try its best to produce showers across the outer edges of the region throughout the week. Areas around Wisconsin and Michigan are forecast to essentially stay dry. But a clipper system will move through this weekend with isolated showers across the entire region and a stronger clipper will move through Sunday and Monday with more widespread showers and potential for lake-effect showers.

In the Northern Plains, a system moved into the region on Sunday night and started to produce areas of showers. Those continue in eastern areas on Monday. A little clipper will move through Wednesday and Thursday with spotty showers and a stronger clipper will move through over the weekend with more widespread rainfall.

In the Central and Southern Plains, heavy rain moved through much of the region over the weekend, though Nebraska and Colorado were fairly dry. The heavy rain should be helpful for drought that was building across the south. A front will move through the region Monday and Tuesday and may have some scattered rain that could add up to some moderate amounts. The region will go on a drier trend to end the week as systems pass by well to the north.

In the Delta, heavy rain moved through the region over the weekend, and another front will move through with showers and moderate rain Tuesday and Wednesday. The rainfall is very beneficial for the drought in the region, but is not forecast to bring up water levels on the Mississippi River too much, which is currently very low.

In the Southeast, a system moved in on Sunday and continues with showers for Monday and Tuesday. Some areas of heavy rain will help with the drought, particularly across Alabama and northern Georgia. Another system will move through on Wednesday with more beneficial rainfall. Some areas in the Tennessee Valley may end up with too much rain and some issues with flooding.

In the Western U.S., a system moved across the north with widespread precipitation that should benefit drought areas in much of the region. The storm track will continue across the north this week with scattered showers Monday, Wednesday and Saturday. The region will have some opportunity for precipitation next week as well. Southern areas are going to be much drier, and drought may start to grow again in that area.
