Above Average For Most, Cooler In West

Cooler temperatures begin to move back into western areas today, with temperatures within 3 degrees of normal in California with temperatures of 4-8 degrees above average across inland regions.

General Overview: ACTIVE WEATHER PATTERN BRINGS RAIN, SNOW, AND SEVERE STORMS TO MUCH OF THE NATION OVER THE NEXT FEW DAYS. FREEZING RAIN THREAT IN THE NORTHEAST AND GREAT LAKES. ABOVE AVERAGE TEMPERATURES FOR MOST OF THE COUNTRY.

EAST:  A complex storm system will bring a variety of hazardous weather to the Eastern U.S. over the next few days. Freezing rain is possible across parts of the Northeast and Great Lakes region, which could lead to dangerous travel conditions and power outages. Heavy rain and thunderstorms are expected across the Mid-Atlantic and Southeast, with a risk of severe storms capable of producing damaging winds and tornadoes. As the system moves through, colder air will filter in behind it, changing precipitation to snow for some northern locations.

Temperature Anomalies:

-Days 1-3: Well above average temperatures, with anomalies of 6-12°F above normal for most areas.

-Days 4-6: Temperatures begin to moderate, but still remain 3-6°F above average for much of the region.

-Days 7-10: Near normal to slightly above average temperatures expected.

CENTRAL:  The Central U.S. will see an active weather pattern with multiple systems moving through. Heavy snow is likely across parts of the Northern Plains and Upper Midwest, while rain and thunderstorms are expected further south. There is a risk of severe thunderstorms in the Southern Plains, with damaging winds, large hail, and tornadoes possible. As colder air moves in behind the systems, a transition to mixed precipitation and snow is expected for some areas of the Northern Plains.

Temperature Anomalies:

-Days 1-3: Significantly above average temperatures, with anomalies of 9-15°F above normal for most of the region.

-Days 4-6: Temperatures begin to cool but remain above average for many areas, especially in the Southern Plains.

-Days 7-10: Near normal to slightly above average temperatures, with some cooler air moving into the Northern Plains.

WEST:  A series of storm systems will bring periods of rain and mountain snow to much of the Western U.S. Heavy snow is expected in the higher elevations of the Rockies and Cascades, which could impact travel through mountain passes. Rain will be beneficial for drought-stricken areas, but there is a risk of flash flooding in some locations, particularly in burn scar areas. Gusty winds will accompany these systems, potentially creating hazardous conditions.

Temperature Anomalies:

-Days 1-3: Near normal to slightly below average temperatures for most areas.

-Days 4-6: Warming trend begins, with temperatures climbing to 3-6°F above average for many locations.

-Days 7-10: Above average temperatures persist, with anomalies of 6-12°F above normal, especially in the Southwest.

TROPICAL: No tropical cyclone activity is expected in the Atlantic or Eastern Pacific basins over the next 7 days.
