AAR: Weekly U.S. Petroleum, Product Carloads Fall Y-o-Y

SECAUCUS, NJ (DTN) — The Association of American Railroads (AAR) data show petroleum and petroleum product carloads totaled 10,136 in the week ending October 25, down by 4.7% from the same week a year ago.

Year to date, petroleum and petroleum products carloads totaled 433,916, down by 1.1% from the corresponding period of the prior year, AAR reported this week.

AAR reports total U.S. weekly rail traffic at 499,688 carloads and intermodal units in the week profiled, down by 3.8% compared with the same week last year.

Total carloads for the week-ended October 25 reached 226,748, down 0.9% compared to the same week last year, while U.S. weekly intermodal volume was 272,940 containers and trailers, a 6.1% decrease from the previous year.

For the first 43 weeks of 2025, U.S. railroads reported cumulative volume of 9,552,801 carloads, higher by 1.9% compared to the same period of last year, and 11,672,717 intermodal units, up 3% from the prior year.

Total combined U.S. traffic for the first 43 weeks of 2025 was 21,225,518 carloads and intermodal units, reflecting a 2.5% increase compared to last year.
